1. What you need to know

Magnification (Zoom)

This is the biggest reason you buy a scope, to make things easier to see than your eye can! Magnification is indicated in 'x' or times; for example a x4 scope, makes it look four times larger. If you are shooting small targets or hunting small things at distance like rabbits we recommend a 'vari-power' scope which can adjust the magnification. A vari-power scope will often be called something like 3-9 or 4-12 but can vary ;)

Here is an example of a target seen through different magnification scopes:

Size of the front lens

The objective lens is the front lens of your scope. Its size is shown in the scope's name, like "3-9x40" where "40" means 40mm diameter. Larger lenses (40mm+) gather more light for a brighter image.

AO - Adjustable Objective

Some scopes have an adjustable objective (AO) dial on the front lens or side turret. This lets make your reticle and object you are shooting at, both be in focus, which is easier on your eye to look at and can improve accuracy. Its not critical but is helpful.

Quality and brightness

When you purchace a more expensive scope you are getting better glass which makes your scope image seem brighter and clearer, and helps identify targets and be accurate. Its also fantastic to look through!

3. Night vision scopes

Night vision - hunting at night (and in the day)

This technology makes night hunting possible, allowing you to operate effectively when natural light isn't enough. Night vision scopes amplify ambient night light to let you see in the dark.

You can hunt possums and rabbits after dark when they're most active and vulnerable. Extend your hunting beyond daylight and target pests when they come out to feed! You can also use night vision scopes during the day using the same digital technology.

4. Thermal scopes

Thermal Imaging - easily find animals though heat

Thermal scopes detect heat signatures instead of light, showing warm objects like animals as bright spots against cooler backgrounds. Unlike night vision which needs some light to work, thermal imaging works in complete darkness, thick fog, or heavy bush.

Animals can't hide from heat sensing - their body temperature gives them away instantly.
