buying a gun safe in nz 1.jpg

At Gun City we sell a wide range of gun safes and storage solutions to suit a wide range of storage needs. Whether that is getting your standard 'A category' firearms licence or your B/P/C/D endorsement. The gun safes we offer for sale are at the least legally compliant with the storage regulations for the New Zealand 'A category' firearms licence standards. We also sell approved safes for B/P/C/D licensing. If you have a firearms licence in NZ then you must have a gun safe securely installed on your primary place of residence as well as compliant storage for your ammunition. If you are looking to apply for your NZ firearms licence see our page here for a full overview of the application process.

Who can purchase a gun safe?

In New Zealand, purchasing a gun safe is open to anyone of any age. There are no sale restrictions due to the many use cases for secure storage. If you however intend to use it for firearm storage you must meet the legal requirements to ultimately have your firearms secure, safe and protected.

Where can I purchase a gun safe?

At any one of our Gun City branches nationwide New Zealand or purchased online through our website for collection at a branch or delivered to you. See our link here on our range of gun safes

What are the basic storage requirements for 'A category' firearms?

Firearms must be kept in a lockable cabinet of stout construction - this is most commonly in the form of a purposefully made steel safe. In regards to minimum strength requirements the steel safe must have a wall thickness of at least 3mm OR if under 3mm thickness to have equivalent strength bracing to prevent the door or the safe from twisting and bending.

What are the basic storage requirements for 'endorsed P/C/B/D category' firearms?

Security requirements for endorsement firearms are more stringent. You would need to look at purchasing a safe that meets the minimum construction requirements (which is greater than the requirements for a standard licence) In most cases this entails a safe of at least 6mm wall thickness or you can have equivalent strength construction. Please ask us about the right safe for your licence needs so we can ensure you have the right model that is approved for the licence you have or are applying for.

What are the basic storage requirements for ammunition?

Ammunition must be stored separately to firearms. It is best recommended to be stored elsewhere in a lockable box such as an ammunition tin with a padlock. Ammunition CAN be stored in your gun safe storage compartment provided the key or combination to the storage compartment is a different key or combination to the main door of your safe. In most cases our gun safes by design have this basis covered.  Firearm bolts should be stored separately from the firearm. It is important to remember to not keep your firearm, ammunition and bolt in the same place through a separated 'safety triangle'. A Separate lockable storage tin with a padlock is a great solution.

What do I need to install a gun safe on my property?

Most of our gun safes will come with pre-drilled holes in the back or bottom and include the needed bolts to be able to secure your gun safe into a wall stud and/or into the floor. Having the means to a power drill will be necessary in order to pre-drill the mating surfaces. Your local hardware store should be able to assist you with any technical questions or for extra parts needed. It's important to note that your safe must be attached to TWO surfaces, sometimes where the safes are only drilled in the bottom you need to choose a second location and it must be into something secure like a wall stud. Because wall studs are at different heights or some customers choose a side where the safes are not drilled on the second surface.

What if my gun safe does not pass the firearms licence application security inspection?

All the gun safes we sell are fully compliant with New Zealand/Firearms Safety Authority regulations, ensuring they meet the necessary safety and security standards required for firearms storage in New Zealand. If there are any concerns from Licence Vettors or if there are any issues during the vetting process, please don't hesitate to contact us. We ask that you provide the name and contact details of the Licence Vettor in question (phone and email is best) and we will work directly with the relevant authorities to resolve any issues swiftly. Your compliance and peace of mind are our top priority.

What do I need to be able to transport my firearms and ammunition in a vehicle?

Firearms and ammunition must be concealed from view outside of the vehicle. The firearms must be rendered inoperable. If it is not possible to quickly remove the bolt by design than you must fit a trigger safety lock mechanism or have your firearm in a locked case or carry bag. Ammunition must be stored separately from any firearms and be inside a locked containment such as a glove box or storage container.
